Bas Jan Ader is often seen as a melancholic and tragic figure, who performed his own experiences in extremely risky self-presentations without making any distinction any more between his art and his own life. In this essay, the exciting and complex œuvre of Bas Jan Ader will not be reduced to this myth.

Bas Jan Ader’s art had the same effect, beauty and pathos when it was exhibited more than 40 years ago, without knowing his family history or the dramatic and mysterious circumstances surrounding his disappearance.At the time Ader was working there was little awareness of the parallel between his art and his haunting family history.

A rebellious student, he failed art school at the Rietveld Academy, where friend Ger van Elk recalls that he would use a single piece of paper for the entire semester, erasing his drawings as soon as they were finished. From Bas Jan Ader’s childhood in Holland learning to sail on the Eems-Dollard Esturary, playing truant from school to go out on the sea with the local prawn fisherman as a teen, wearing only clothing of a particular shade of ocean blue, through his many seminal and highly influential art works to his final fateful ocean voyage at the age of 33, water has been a leitmotif throughout his life.

The circumstances of his disappearance have led many interpreters to identify Ader with the role of the tragic romantic hero. In a forthcoming catalogue essay, Philipp Kaiser, curator of “Disappearing—California, c. 1970: Bas Jan Ader, Chris Burden, Jack Goldstein,” opening at the Modern Art Museum Fort Worth on May 10th, explicitly connects Ader’s “decided interest in loss of control and self-determination” with the death of his father, an early trauma that inspired Ader’s fixation on “falling, and Bas Jan Ader was very aware and influenced by the circumstances of his father's tragic death when he unconsciously recreated it in his 1971 masterpiece. However, what happened later on could not be forseen; the event of his own disappearance when he set sail across the Atlantic ocean to film the scenes for his In Search of the Miraculous trilogy.
